Cross Foxes is a story of vision, dedication, and family — built not from a background in hospitality, but from a shared love of the countryside, good walks, and the kind of welcoming pub that makes the perfect reward at the end of a day.

Located at the foot of Cadair Idris near Dolgellau, Gwynedd, this Grade II listed building was lovingly rescued and transformed by Dewi and Nicol Gwynne. When they bought the derelict Cross Foxes in 2007, they saw more than crumbling stone — they saw potential, character, and a chance to create something special.
Cross Foxes was Dewi’s baby. A builder by trade, he had a deep love for the fabric of the building — especially the stone — and poured his heart into every detail. His passion for quality, perfectionism, and craftsmanship is woven into every corner of the property, from the handcrafted finishes to the thoughtful layout.
Together with Nicol, who brought business insight and warmth to the venture, they opened Cross Foxes in 2010. At the time, their sons Deian and Derei were just 4 and 2 — making this truly a family journey from the beginning.
Their original team remains part of the story today, with the same head chef since opening and Kera, now front of house manager, who started alongside them in 2010.
Following the success of Cross Foxes, Dewi and Nicol took on another challenge in 2016, acquiring and developing the Hafod with the same care and passion.
In 2024, Dewi sadly passed away. Today, Nicol and the loyal Cross Foxes team continue his legacy — upholding the high standards, heart, and soul that he put into the place he loved.
